Last night I went to hear author, Immaculee Ilibagiza, speak at a local church here in Chicago. Her book " Left to Tell:Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust" was on the New York Times Bestseller list within 2 weeks after it came out.
She presented her amazing story of surviving 3 months in a tiny bathroom with 8 other women while everyone else was slaughtered...in a horrific genocide. She explained how she prayed and prayed to God for strength and struggled with hate and fear in that bathroom. She kept surrendering it all to God, finding strength in a growing trust and faith that she discovered as the hours passed.
Her constant discovery was only God was the only reality, and she had to surrender it all to him. On her knees in devotion and complete surrender she came to know God intimately. By the grace of God she has forgiven those who slaughtered her entire family... She radiates peace and love.
Her life after emerging from that bathroom is shockingly beautiful...and she has emerged as a light in this world. I was blessed to hear her speak and to meet this humble woman...a living Saint.
My wife and her family had read Immaculee's book after they found it in my bookstore. And they have been overflowing with excitement ever since... Last night I understood why...and I promised my wife I will read her book! I want to read her book and tell others about it.
My wife's family and I also met Claire, another Rwandan girl there at the event. Claire we had seen with her sister on Oprah's show. Claire and her sister had escaped the genocide and lived in a refugee camp. The rest of their family had been murdered they assumed as they never found them again. Claire and her sister were adopted by an American family and raised in the states. On the Oprah Show...Oprah surprised them by bringing out their Family and reuniting them ON THE SHOW! It was breath taking....to see such a beautiful moment. CAN YOU IMAGINE???
So we got to meet Claire who was there to meet Immaculee and lives here in Chicago. To hear their stories of courage and faith...and the REAL HELL they lived through...just exposes all of our neuroses and petty grievances for the nothing that they are....just irrelevant!!!
I bow to these survivors and pray that we will not keep closing our eyes and turning our backs while these atrocities continue all over the world.
The same thing is happening right now in Darfur! Lets get our politicians to address this current holocaust!
